Lucinda Slim & The Lone Stars

What we have here is a new soul 7″ (that’s the size of a vinyl 45) out on Melting Pot Music. The artist, Lucinda Slim, is a singer/songwriter/DJ out of London. Actually, Lucinda Slim is an alter ego of one, Nia Shaw, who is also a member of the Afro-European vocal outfit – Zap Mama. The track has been produced by Belgian producer, Krewcial. Belgium – what it do doe!

So go ahead and enjoy the song. If you buy vinyl, you definitely could use this in your collection.

Meanwhile, here at Frying in Vein, we are preparing for a big move to our own personal site. That’s right, folks. Frying in Vein dot com is coming soon! Thanks for rolling with us.

Everybody DESERVES A Place To Stay

A couple of cool young professionals, who just happened to be a part of a group called Motor City Connect and started their own subsidiary group within the organization called MCC Millennials, are helping raise awareness for an emergency shelter in Pontiac, Michigan. The establishment is the HOPE Hospitality & Warming Center, Inc. Previously called Place Called HOPE, it is a shelter that provides seasonal accommodations for those in need in Northern Oakland County, turning NO ONE away. For more info, check the HOPE website and peep the video the cool MCC Millennials group put together below:

Fancy Lad Music: Creative Tunes for Creative Media

I recently attended my first Tweet-Up – and the first one of 2009 for the Detroit Tweet-Up Network (you might want to join if you aren’t already) – at the Buffalo Wild Wings in Novi. It was nuts as there were over 80 people in attendance. Many of the major social media enthusiasts were in the mix like Shannon PaulCharlie WollborgHenry Balanon and Brandon Chesnutt. The event was overwhelming, but I got to meet a lot of people that I connect with daily on Twitter. The greatest thing that happened was I got to reconnect with an old chum that I know from college – Fabian Halabou of Fancy Lad Music.

I was excited to see someone I knew looking to shop their musical talents for commercial use. I know many an artist might frown at the idea, but at the end of the day, we all need to feed ourselves. The talented guys at Fancy Lad definitely have the skills to pay the bills, but they decided to legitimately set themselves up to possibly see some real income from it. Fabian and his business partners are looking to connect with local and national ad agencies that want good revelant tunes (read: hip music) to add “flavor” to their marketing campaigns. The one thing I always notice when I hear some of the music in various commercials is that a lot of it is hit-or-miss. Folks like Fancy Lad would be a good place to find quality tunes that would strike a chord with a variety of audiences. The guys can do everything from pop rock to hip hop to abstract electronica and I will vouch that it is all solid. Don’t believe me? See for yourself, check out their demo reel that they have available on their website. You can even download 14 of their tracks for your MP3 player!

My boy Fabian is also a member of a local Detroit band called The Silent Years in which he plays guitar. I’ve been chilling to their soothing pop rock sounds for the past couple of days as I realized they have their first album available for free. You should definitely give this a listen if you’re not a chump or a poser.

7 Random Things About Me Meme

Greetings all, it looks like I have finally been tagged in the 7 Random Things Meme. I got the cool distinction of being tagged by Beverly Cornell – author of Global Business Perspectives.

You should already know I am random if you read this blog. I don’t know if this list affirms or refutes that logic, but here goes:

1) I am a sugar addict. My major weaknesses are in the form of donuts, rich cakes and pies. This is the reason I am participating in the 30 Sugar-Free Days Challenge started by Dr. Scott Olson to try and break this addiction.

2) When I was 15, I got the opportunity to go to Japan as an exchange student in the Detroit / Toyota City Sister Cities program. This experience changed my life forever. Being a sheltered kid from Detroit, I had no idea there were areas that were TOTALLY different from the United States. If not for this trip, I have no idea what I would be like today. From my musical taste (which is where I was first hipped to a certain Detroit hip hop producer – thanks Justin Brown) to my general worldview, Japan shook me up like a martini made for James Bond.

3) When MSU rioted in 1999 after losing to Duke, I followed behind the riot police squad as the shot tear gas at crazed… property defacers. Talk about surreal.

4) I once ate a serving of french fries a day for 48 days straight. The streak was started during my 6-week excursion in Europe. Streak ended at a Wendy’s when it got robbed at gunpoint. My fries got dropped on the floor as they were being handed to me. Again, I didn’t freak – I wanted to maim the assailant.

5) As a hobby, I rap. I like doing it, but don’t care about making money with it. www.myspace.com/gambitthemc

6) I used to own over 5000 vinyl records; I own about 15% of that now. I’m a music junkie. I still have over 200 professionally-released cassette tapes. I also have reel-to-reels, but no player… YET.

7) I met my fiancee at a Halloween party in Detroit. I was dressed as Tyrone Biggums – the character from The Chappelle Show. Yes, the crackhead… and I barely meeting her that first time. Horrible, I know…

Peter Fox – “Alles Neu” (Translation: “Everything New”)

I got hipped to this via one of the coolest girls – aside from my future wife (hi honey!) – that I know, Annika Howe. Note to readers: if you do not have your own name with a dot com behind it, then you are at FAIL right now. I’m just saying, I told you so. Yeah yeah, this ain’t no Hubert Sawyers dot com or gambit the mc dot com, but this isn’t about me.

Anyway, the artist goes by the name of Peter Fox. He’s the singer in a group called Seeed. Based on the YouTube views alone, I can see these guys are very major overseas. I must say I am digging the worldly pop reggae sound of Seeed, but this is about Peter Fox (Wikipedia info).

“Alles Neu” features the Cold Steel Drumline. Word to Phat Kat and eLZhi. You know I’m going to do my Google work, so here is a YouTube video of the group from North Carolina A&T below. Now I don’t know if this is the same crew, so if you know better – PLEASE CLARIFY!

With all that said, I know there are people that hate to listen to music in a different language. I always feel that if it is jammin’ that it never matters. Peter Fox is pumpin’ to me – word to PUTS. For more information on Peter Fox, check him out on MySpace.
