Before I get into talking about one of my favorite events in my hometown – Movement (formerly known as Detroit Electronic Music Festival or DEMF) – I want to make it clear that my open letter to the production company behind the event is constructive. There is no malicious intent from anyone in the FryinginVein.com camp. We only want the best for Detroit, so we offered our ideas on what can keep the event thriving. With that out of the way, let’s get talk techno, shall we?
Well not just techno, Movement is a celebration of all forms of electronic-based and -inspired music, but techno is the nucleus of it all. This year is headlined by Richie Hawtin as Plastikman, Model 500 and Inner City. The original electronic music festival in the birthplace of techno started in 2000. It has gone through many hands with an attached story that could rival a soap opera. Through it all, it is still Detroit and it is still the festival for everyone that loves electronic music, whether it be artists from Ghostly, the Princess of Chicago Juke Revival Kid Sister or Mr. Scuff.
Recently, online electronic music magazine Resident Advisor posted the most extensive, candidly-structureed historical review of the electronic music festival in Detroit, starting at its genesis. Once we saw the oral historical account, we figured there is not much else we needed to do in that space. You can expect features throughout this week on many of the artists we look forward to checking out at the festival. We hope to see you there!
